Review: Tetris (2020)

Setup: iPhone 11 Pro (iOS 13)
Developer: N3TWORK
Publisher: Tetris Holdings
Release Date: 1/20/2020
Platforms: iOS, Android

There’s a new Tetris game. It’s out on iOS and Android.

It’s Tetris. That’s it, that’s the review.

… except, you know what, it isn’t the review. Because the remarkable thing here is that it’s just fuckin Tetris. There’s exactly one microtransaction, which is to pay to permanently turn ads off. That’s $4.99. Other than that, there are (currently) no gimmicks. You play Tetris. You can flip and hold blocks and swipe down to slam a block into place. As you go from level one to level 10 and beyond, it gets harder to play Tetris.

There are no weird space travel backstories, no out-of-place game modes you had to pay extra to play, none of EA’s other requisite mobile hot nonsense, just… Tetris. The way God and Pajitnov intended. 5/7, perfect game.
